Half-Life Sound Selector (HLSS) is a program written by Disk2. It allows users to play multiple wave files over the voice-communication system built in to many popular Steam games, particularly those created by Valve and those that use the GoldSrc and Source Engine. The latest version, 3.00, was released on June 28, 2002. DetailsHLSS does not act as a "virtual microphone", but as a program that interacts with an audio file playing system already implemented in the games. HLSS generally acts as a file replacement program, that replaces a single audio file in a game's directory ("voice_input.wav") whenever a specific key is pressed. The key and its audio file are specified by the user. Doing so will copy and paste that audio file to the 'voice_input.wav' file. In order for HLSS to work, a script must be copied by the user to a configuration file in the game's directory. Then a keybinding code must be entered in the in-game developer console. This must be done for each game. HLSS requires sound files intended to run on Source-based games to be 16-bit Mono Wave files at 11025 hertz. GoldSrc-based games require the same at 8000 hertz.
