Till date i was a school kid, I have had a great fond of advertisements and related stuffs, I m not an MBA or marketing guy but brands, branding, brand building and brand positioning are the terms of my hobbies. So, as a kid on that time i participated so many contests ( in early 90 s i was in school and that was the time in India was bubbling of MNC s and corporatisation ), some I won too. Meantime, I also gave some punch lines to some of big brands and share my concerns and ideas with famous / popular big brands of Indian Markets. Looking for market for handmade sock monsters - input appreciated?
Q. I make sock monsters (like sock monkeys, but a little punk) and they are extremely popular with my college age friends and I've made a few for pay. Being a crafty individual I love to make these things. I've recently thought about selling them to the public. They fall halfway between toys and textile art and each one is an individual with its own adoption papers. So my question is what sort of market place would support the sale of these things? I'm not looking to support myself, but I would like the hobby to be self-sustaining (which at $4 a pair doesn't take too much). The local farmer's market has crafts, but they're all sort of 'country kitchen' and I don't think my little monsters would sell well enough to make a table affordable. … [cont.]

A. Finding the right market for unusual items is tough. The best bet might be to put them on ebay and see how they do and take it from there. You can start the bidding low with a reserve, or you could just do a buy it now sort of thing. Either way make sure you are pricing them so your expenses are covered, and you have an approriate profit. Depending on the options you've chosen, ebay can rack up the fees. After ebay, you could talk to local shop owners (if any). Maybe your monsters would fit into a local store that is frequented by your target market. Stay away from the chains unless you can mass market. Good Luck!

When to come up with a business name and other small business tips, please?
Q. My ultimate goal is to open a successful jewelry/jewelry repair shop. I don't have money or the 'know how' to get started but I've educated myself quite a bit. I have a plan to reach my ending goal. It will take time but I'm positive I can do it. 1) First I want to get started finding merchandise at thrift stores or flea markets and selling them online. This will teach me how to keep track of income, build my skill in financing, and I can start a website. With the extra money I gain will start step two, jewelry making. 2) Making beaded jewelry or wire jewelry I can build my creativity for different styles. This will also help me determine if my ending goal is only a phase or hobby to look forward to rather than an actual goal that will… [cont.]

A. Sonya, you're taking this in a step-by-step manner, so you're on the right path. The main problem that I see is you're missing the experience - in the marketplace and in the shop. If you could go to work in a jewelry shop, this would help you get proper experience in all aspects of the trade. It might take years, but you'll get a better feel for what it takes to run a business by being there helping someone else run their business. Your idea of online selling is good. It's a no-cost/low-cost way to start up and get your feet wet. You can do this while you gain experience. The time to advertise your company name (at no cost) is now. Get known by others with a company name that is short, memorable, descriptive and easy to spell. This will… [cont.]

How do I invest in a specific stock that will be an IPO in the Brazilian stock market?
Q. I live in the USA and use Scottrade to do online trading as a hobby but I want to invest in specific stocks that are in the brazilian stock market. I don't mind using another online trading program or to even set up an online Brazilian bank account. I just don't know how to get into online stock trading for Brazilian stocks. Please help me and let me know what programs to look into and how to do this. Thanks

A. The best way as you mentioned would be to open a Brazilian bank account, and a Brazilian brokerage. Once you do that you need to fulfill the local regulations to be allowed to invest in Brazilian IPO's. As far as investing from your Scottrade account you will probably only be allowed to invest in the IPO's of fully listed ADR's. If you are a qualified accredited investor you should be able to invest in Level 1 ADR's.

Starting a fish business?
Q. I'm wondering if starting an at-home fish breeding/selling business is a viable option for me in a couple years. I've collected quite a few tanks that could be breeders, etc. and I've become quite knowledgeable about fish over the past 15 years or so, but I want to make sure that I can actually do this while making a few bucks (obviously I'm not looking for a get-rich-quick scheme...I've had fish my whole life and this would be a great way for me to continue to have fish, while hopefully bringing in enough money to support my fish hobby/obsession). First off, what types of fish are the best selling/most popular fish on the market? How hard is it to sell to people online and to pet stores? I've already sold a few of my swordtails and… [cont.]

A. I think thats a great idea, considerering you love fish. You should clean out (unless you already have) a big spacious room to store your fish in. You are going to need heating, so you can have multiple heaters in different tanks, or have the whole room heated to te appropriate temperature. I am sure they sell more affordable options then multiple heaters, but you'll have to do that yourself. :( Setting up a fish room is pretty easy if you have time on your hands, as this is what your going to have to do before you start selling them. There's a pretty good article in this months issue of Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine on setting up a fish room. You definately going to need to buy mutiple tanks (breeding, housing, and selling) so… [cont.]

I did have a RTF Cessna Trainer 40 but my dad got his finger's broken, by the Prop. So I don t like the petrol once, even if they are more powerful. I love anything that fly's but like fixed wing the most. I was wondering what the best electric RTF modal is, on the Australian market. Modal that s powerful, and good-looking. And not just a box with wings. My partner and I are looking at taking it up as a full time hobby. Where to get quality silk flowers for new wreath Business?
Q. I've designed silk flower wreaths for many years, and, after seeing a couple of other online designers earn $150.00-$250.00+ per wreath, I decided to start my own online wreath business. I've invested a lot in flowers and supplies and made my first two wreaths for the business, and but I'm pretty down about it all and wondering if this is a good idea after all. I realize that there's very little room for profit as these lavish wreaths are so expensive to make. I've easily sunk about $125.00+ into each of the wreaths I've made so far--not counting the many hours it took me to make them. These other designers must be getting their silk flowers somewhere at a much lower price--or have some inside connection to the silk flower market. Any… [cont.]

What makes the 3 thin blades on wind generators more efficient then say, a decorative country windmill?
Q. If you look online for wind generators you'll find a truck load of pictures of windmills that are mounted on thin poles that only have 3 thin blades. I've taken it up as a hobby to find how & to build myself one. But I'm retro. I don't get why those 3 thin blades hooked up to a rotary engine sort of machine could be more efficient then then the nice homely country windmills that are composed of 6-10 blades inside a metal ring with of course the wind vein mounted on the back. I can understand this with those gigantic wind turbines on wind farms but i just want a smaller one based off one i could buy at a farmers market or something like that. I don't want to stick it on a 30' pole but instead plant it right on the roof of my home & run it… [cont.]
Asked by Hunter - Tue Sep 15 23:07:18 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's actually not (just) efficiency that causes most wind turbines to only have 3 blades instead of 6 or 10 or such. Increasing the number of blades does increase the aerodynamic efficiency, but the increase gets smaller each time. For instance, increasing blade number from 1 to 2 ups efficiency by 6%, while 2 to 3 ups it by only 3%. The fact that more blades also mean smaller blades - so they can all fit - mean that eventually the efficiency benefit gets so small that the lack of stiffness and amount of materials becomes simply too much. Also, the fewer blades allow higher angular momentum (rotation speed) and decreased cost.

A. Okay well I am no expert at this but I can show you some grammatical errors as well as bring up some things I learned from "The millionaire matchmaker" lol Errors to fix: "su-kissed skin." "pasionate," "can be sily" "livingin" You write with non-capitalized "i " a couple times. "i learnt etiquete classes, languages, arts inlcuiding " "lessons. grew up" Capitalize properly... it makes you look intelligent. "travling, " "scoba diving, " I think that your strong points are that you're open-minded and knowledgeable. The weak point in the profile is that it comes off a little like "Look how cultured and amazing I am," and that can be intimidating. I think you should pick personality points and let the hobbies be cool surprises for your date.… [cont.]

Can you help identify this OTF knife?
Q. was at a local flea market and came across a knife I wanted. I have always wanted an out-the-front knife and this one was just ridiculous. The seller said it was a Robbie Dalton which didn't mean anything to me. The thing is huge and when I got home I tried to find it online. I can only find a 3" one and not the size I have. Is this knife an impostor? Is it a special edition? Any idea on a value? It appears to be a large version of an M6 if its genuine. This knife is *not* illegal to own where I live though it would be if I carried it. It just hangs out in a drawer at my house and is perfectly legal in doing so. The handle has *no* markings whatsoever; I hope the picture captured all the detail on the blade. Any help or more… [cont.]

A. Well dude, if it's in good shape, mechanism works, etc. I think you made out like a bandit. This one page I found said that if it was mint it'd be in the 400 dollar range. Looks like most of these style knives sold around the 300-400 dollar range. So, for 175 you made out pretty good. What you have there is in fact an M9 Tanto tip, the big brother of the M6. Good buy. I don't know anything specific about the Dalton blades, but it shouldn't be hard to dig up some reviews if you're interested in the company. FWIW...go take a look over at www.bladeforums.com Poke around the manufacturers, read some reviews. R.A.T. (Randall Adventure Training) Knives are incredible. Look at the Izula. Collectors: Has the internet effected the way you enjoy your hobby?
Q. My mom collects a certain brand of antique china. Back in the day, it was pretty hard to find; she'd scour the antique malls and flea markets and be thrilled to find even one piece. It took her years to build her collection. Now that everyone's online, sites like ebay make it much easier to find. And with so many pieces available, the prices have dropped from what she used to pay in a shop. That's a good thing, in a way... but it's kinda taken the fun out of it. There's no longer that "thrill of the hunt" that made her hobby so much fun. Has anyone else found this to be the case?
Asked by Ashley - Thu Sep 24 21:18:43 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, yes and no. I still want to see and touch the things I collect. I still prefer to go to the antique malls, flea markets, yard sales, etc. I'm not one for buying antiques and collectibles on the internet, but my daughter is. For example, for months I was looking for a specific antique book, and my husband and I would check every booth in those places and have fun doing it. I knew that one day I would find it and that it would be one of those "look, there it is!" moments. But I was disappointed one Christmas when one of my presents was the book. Why? Because my husband told my kid to find it on the internet and buy it. The search was over and I didn't appreciate the book as much as I would have if I found it myself. This… [cont.]
