News Corporation (NASDAQ: NWS,NASDAQ: NWSA,ASX: NWS,ASX: NWSLV), often abbreviated to News Corp., is the world's second-largest media conglomerate (behind The Walt Disney Company) as of 2008 and the world's third largest in entertainment as of 2009 . Q. What actually happens at their Headquarters, and where else do they manage companies from? I.e. not all of the companies they own e.g. Sony Entertainment and 20th Century Fox are based at the company's HQ, so what happens at the HQ, (as well as with any major corporation) and what happens at other bases? Are any subsidiaries based at the HQs of MNCs, or is it just all the superior financial, trading, marketing etc. stuff that happens at company HQs? Hope that all makes sense. Thanks in advance. At the very least the consolidated accounts (yearly, quarterly, ...) will be drawn up at the group's HQ, that is a legal obligation. The HQ will also support the group's executives. A company like Birkshire Hathaway (nyse BRKA) has 217.000 employees in the group but only 15 of them work in the HQ. Obviously they give the subsidiaries a lot of freedom. A company like Ford has extensive HQ where HR, finance, audit, marketing, ... are concentrated. A ford plant has to build the cars the HQ directs them to do. But branches like Volvo and Jaguar have there own HQ and are hence able to develop there own corporate culture.
